Antique Chinese rug, hand-knotted.

Set against a dark blue field, the composition centres on a flower vase, books, scrolls and symbolic objects arranged on a ceremonial altar. These elements evoke values such as culture, knowledge, longevity and prosperity, recurring throughout Chinese iconography. A meander border with auspicious motifs completes the composition without disturbing its symmetry. Made in wool, the rug belongs to the Beijing tradition of the early twentieth century.
