Sofa designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, 1935.
Produced by Cassina since 1988 as part of the iMaestri collection.

Shown here in the three-seat curved version, Utrecht brings Rietveld’s geometric language into a softer, more domestic form. Built with a steel frame, polyurethane foam padding, polyester wadding and Cat. E fabric upholstery, the sofa has a compact, continuous volume defined by the distinctive exposed zig-zag stitching. Designed in the 1930s for Metz & Co. in Amsterdam, the sofa retains the structural clarity of the original design, giving it a comfortable yet highly recognisable form. Also available with other upholstery options, sizes and finishes on request.

Design: 1935
Dimensions: W 204 × D 102 × H 70 cm

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

Born in Utrecht on June 24, 1888, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld seems to embody two distinct personalities, so clearly defined that his work appears almost as if it were not the creation of a single artist. The first is that of the cabinetmaker, a craftsman of a primordial language, who reinvents chairs and furniture as if no one had ever built them before, following his entirely personal structural code. The second is that of the architect, working with elegant formulas to assert, within the context of European architecture, rationalist and neoplastic principles.
