Casablanca Cabinet

Storage unit and bookcase designed by Ettore Sottsass for Memphis Milano, 1981.

With Casablanca, Ettore Sottsass turns a storage solution into a tall, totemic composition. Projecting shelves, open compartments and closed storage volumes alternate across a wooden body covered in decorative laminate, while graphic patterns and bold colour contrasts give the piece its unmistakable Memphis character. Presented during Memphis’s inaugural season, Casablanca reflects Sottsass’s aim to move furniture beyond simple function, making it not only useful but symbolic and deliberately theatrical.
