Stanhope Bed
Michael Graves
Production Memphis Milano
ed designed by Michael Graves for Memphis Milano, 1982.
Stanhope translates Michael Graves’s architectural language into a monumental and immediately recognisable piece for the bedroom. Made from burr maple veneer, lacquered wood, mirror, brass and glass, the bed brings structure, lighting and bedside tables into a single integrated system, turning the sleeping area into a small architectural environment. The richness of the materials and the theatrical construction capture the postmodern character of the Memphis period, bringing together function, decoration and symbolic form. Designed for a European king-size mattress, 180 × 210 cm, not included, it comes complete with 20 EU 12V 3W bulbs, retains the original Memphis plaque and is accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity.

Michael Graves
Michael Graves was born in Indianapolis in 1934 and was an American architect, designer, and educator, active across architecture, product design, and theoretical reflection. A key figure in the transition from Modernism to Postmodernism, he contributed to the international debate on architectural language, challenging functionalist rigor through symbolic forms and historical references. His work introduced an ironic, colorful, and highly symbolic language into product design, contrasting with Modernist austerity, and his research helped make design more communicative and accessible to the wider public.
