Liuto takes its name from the Italian word for “lute”, reflected in the enveloping shape of the seat. A curved padded shell is framed by sculpted wooden details, giving the armchair a distinctive, almost musical profile. This early example is upholstered in black fabric rather than the more commonly seen leather, making it a rare collector’s piece.

Born in Rome in 1931, Paolo Portoghesi was an architect, historian, and theorist of Italian architecture. His work intertwined design, historical research, and critical reflection, re-evaluating the language of Baroque and symbolic architecture. Portoghesi conceived architecture as a dialogue between past and present, where historical continuity becomes a stimulus for innovation.
