Armchair designed by Paolo Portoghesi for Poltronova, 1970.

A rare early version of Paolo Portoghesi’s 1970 armchair for Poltronova. Its name, Liuto, meaning “lute” in Italian, is echoed in the soft, enveloping form of the seat: the curved padded shell and carved wooden details give the piece an almost musical profile. This example is upholstered in black fabric, distinguishing it from the leather version more commonly associated with the model. Produced by Poltronova in the 1970s, it is a rare piece with strong collectible appeal.

Paolo Portoghesi

Born in Rome in 1931, Paolo Portoghesi was an architect, historian, and theorist of Italian architecture. His work intertwined design, historical research, and critical reflection, re-evaluating the language of Baroque and symbolic architecture. He advocated for an architecture attentive to context, memory, and formal complexity. Portoghesi conceived architecture as a dialogue between past and present, where historical continuity becomes a stimulus for innovation.
